French police arrest 17 in Tamil Tiger swoop

(Reuters) - French police arrested 17 suspected Tamil Tigers on Sunday in a morning raid aimed at the armed separatist group's fundraising operations, a police source said.

The men, 16 Tamils and one Frenchman, were arrested in Paris and various suburbs as part of an investigation into "financing terrorism", extorsion of funds, and money laundering, the source said.

"The people we arrested are senior members of the Tamil Tiger leadership in France," the source said.

The Tamil Tigers say they are fighting for an independent state for minority Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The group is listed as a terrorist organisation in France.

The men were held for questioning by police. Several thousand euros were seized in the operation, the source said.
